A CLINICAL WORKSHOP ON WORKING WITH SAFETY, CONNECTION, RUPTURE AND REPAIR
WITH KOBUS VAN DER MERWE
This post-conference two day workshop will be led by our illustrious colleague, Kobus van der Merwe from South Africa. Kobus has been working closely with Harville Hendrix and Maya Kollman to develop this exciting new workshop based on Harville’s latest thinking. Harville introduced this important new extension to Imago Relationship Theory at the Chicago Conference in October 2025.
The workshop translates the relational paradigm into clinical practice. If healing happens between people, what does the therapist actually do? How do clinicians recognise the state of the relational field, protect connection, work with rupture, and help restore safety and mutuality in real time?
Using concepts and practices grounded in Imago and accessible to clinicians from all modalities, this workshop focuses on moment-to-moment therapeutic work in the Space-Between. Participants will learn how to shift from working primarily with individual content to working with the quality of contact itself. The emphasis is practical: therapist stance, relational tracking, dialogical process, embodied presence, and concrete interventions that strengthen connection and support repair.

- How to notice and track the state of the between
- How to work clinically with disconnection and rupture
- How to strengthen safety, mutuality, and contact
- How therapist presence and structure shape the field
- How to translate relational theory into practical method

- Apply dialogical and relational interventions that strengthen the Space-Between.

MOVING FROM SURVIVAL TO CONNECTION IN THE SPACE BETWEEN with Hayley Hoffman and Orli Wahrman
Join us for an experiential two-day training that explores the powerful mariage of Polyvagal Theory and Imago Relationship Therapy. This integrative approach combines neuroscience and relational practice to help attendees guide couples from reactivity and defense toward safety, regulation, and genuine connection.
Polyvagal-Informed Imago Relationship Therapy provides us with practical tools to recognize and regulate the nervous system states that fuel conflict. By blending Imago’s structured dialogue with a Polyvagal understanding of safety and co-regulation, we can gain deeper insight into how people can experience threat and disconnection — and how to help them return to calm, presence, and partnership.
Participants will learn to:
- Regulate before relating: Cultivating awareness of physiological states and cues of safety.
- Listen beyond words: Tuning into tone, rhythm, and body signals that shape connection.
- Repair ruptures with compassion: Using empathic dialogue to restore safety and trust.
- Sustain resonance: Expanding the capacity for presence, curiosity, and shared calm.
- Experience embodied exercises that enhance safety, co-regulation, and nervous system attunement.
This training honors both the biology of love and the art of dialogue. You’ll explore how the autonomic nervous system shapes perception, defense, and connection — and how to weave Polyvagal-informed interventions into Imago’s core processes.
Through a mix of didactic learning, live demonstration, and guided practice, you’ll develop embodied confidence and a stronger therapeutic presence. Leave equipped with a clear framework and effective tools to help couples move from survival to connection — and to cultivate safety as the foundation for healing and growth.

Imago Australia was formed 21 years ago in Perth and to celebrate this auspicious event, we are running a conference in Western Australia. A time of great joy and celebration, alongside rich opportunities for learning and connection.

Our conference theme celebrates not only our 21st anniversary, but also Imago by the Beach. We have chosen a venue that honours both nature and learning – set just a few meters from the shoreline – inviting connection, reflection, and inspiration in a truly beautiful coastal setting.
The Conference opens with a registration and drinks on the night of the 15th October and runs for the next 3 days finishing on Sunday 18 October at 1:00pm.

Cottesloe Beach is located roughly halfway between Perth and the Port of Fremantle. The Cottesloe Beach Hotel looks over the beach and offers many areas in which to relax, conference rooms overlooking the sea and many eating options.
